Former President Clinton is Vegan*

His diet has come a long way from what it was when he was president.

As described in a CNN article:

By the time he reached the White House, Bill Clinton’s appetite was legend. He loved hamburgers, steaks, chicken enchiladas, barbecue and french fries but wasn’t too picky. At one campaign stop in New Hampshire, he reportedly bought a dozen doughnuts and was working his way through the box until an aide stopped him.

Making Whipped Cream, Considering a Juice Cleanse, Buying Vegan Cheese

This Week on Food Sense

Earlier this week, I picked up a potted basil plant at Trader Joe’s for a moment. Could I grow it in my apartment on the 8th floor of a high rise building in downtown Philadelphia? Deep down, I think I wanted to recreate the experience of my mom’s garden in Florida. I love cooking at my parents’ house. What’s it like to go on a juice cleanse?

I am, of course, a big believer in plant-based eating, but here’s what comes to my mind when I hear the word, “cleanse.”

A Definitive Guide to Vegan Cheese

Giving up cheese was probably the hardest part of going vegan for me. In fact, as I’ve talked with others for our Monologues series, that is a common theme.

And, if you think about it, it makes sense. Because, (set aside where cheese comes from and focus on the food itself for a moment), cheese is smooth, gooey, and salty. It’s a key ingredient in a lot of comfort foods, foods that we positively associate with our childhood (grilled cheese), get-togethers with friends (pizza), and rainy Sunday afternoons (mac and cheese).

How to Make Vegan Whipped Cream

I don’t think I can say it any better than this:

Who doesn’t love whipped cream? It turns a slice of pie into a celebration, a scoop of ice cream into a sundae, and simple bowl of berries into a fabulous dessert.

Sure, you can buy non-dairy whipped cream in a can. But, Lee Zalben’s piece for Serious Eats is informative, entertaining, critical, and yes - it will make you want to whip up a dessert that you can top with his cashew-based cream.
